Family papers at the Perugia State Archive

Because of their significant historical interest, in May 1951 Uguccione Ranieri di Sorbello deposited the family records of the Marquises Bourbon di Sorbello with the State Archives of Perugia.
They comprise 136 series of loose papers and 216 registers. Most of the oldest documentation, regarding investitures and privileges, is composed of copies. The categories of the papers include family memoirs, decorations, papal bulls and briefs, investitures, the Sorbello jurisdiction, accomandigie (agreements for protection), domestic interests, foreign affairs, commendams, and letters from distinguished people.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, eminent bibliophiles, such as Antonio Brizi of Perugia and Ugo Barberi of Bologna, were appointed to draw up suitable inventories. More recently, restoration work was carried out and a new inventory was drawn up by Margherita Malagnino from the State Archives of Perugia.
The archives contain the correspondence between the Marquises di Sorbello and historical figures such as Federico da Montefeltro, Luigi Farnese, Cosimo I de’ Medici, the Savoy royals and many others.
