Jonathan Aylen is senior lecturer at PREST and head of the TIEMPO subject group within Manchester Business School of the University of Manchester in England. He began his career as an economist carrying out a cost-benefit analysis of historic building restoration.
Jonathan has researched climate change and tourism. His focus is on modelling the impact of the weather and climate on moorland wildfires and the effect of weather on visits to leisure facilities such as zoos. He is a co-investigator on an EPSRC funded project on “Carbon Vision: Unlocking low carbon potential” assessing why energy saving innovations get blocked.
His research on econometric forecasting has been funded by Corus Engineering Steels, with papers in the International Journal of Forecasting and elsewhere. He is a frequent keynote speaker at international conferences on steel technology. He is currently working with Professor Ranieri on the wide strip mill in Europe, exploring how this major American innovation came to be adopted in Europe. Jonathan gave the Barraclough Memorial Lecture on the topic in Sheffield in 2007.
Jonathan is a former President of Manchester Statistical Society, rated as a Grade 5 mechanical engineer in the last UK Research Assessment and member of the rolling committee of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
Jonathan is joint convenor of an informal group of manufacturers and retailers on Forecasting for the Supply Chain which meets in Manchester. He has a growing interest in computer history and military technology.
