The collection of paintings of the Marquises Ranieri di Sorbello is the result both of the artistic passion of certain family members and the accumulation of works through marriage and inheritance.
Protected by an entail (fidecommesso) since 1583, the Sorbello picture gallery managed to survive both the plundering by the Jacobins of the late 18th century as well as the 19th-century sales whereby many Perugian art collections were dispersed on the European market. Although reduced in size during the 20th century, it still retains its original identity, representing a rare example of noble collecting in Perugia between the 18th and 19th centuries.
Among the most significant works are precious panels from the Perugian school, paintings by late-Mannerist Tuscan artists linked to the Counter-Reformation, and works by renowned Neoclassical painters such as Pietro Benvenuti, Carlo Labruzzi, and François-Xavier Fabre.
The Ranieri di Sorbello Foundation ETS safeguards and promotes this heritage, making it accessible to scholars for research and study.
